Mould and bacteria require certain environmental conditions in order to grow and reproduce, basically it breeds.

Mould is at its best in warm, damp and humid conditions.

Initially mould needs moisture as a source from where to begin. This could come from a water leak, flood damage, steam or even condensation.

High humidity, anything above 60% Relative Humidity rapidly accelerates mould growth at an exponential rate.

Lack of adequate ventilation/air circulation further compounds any humidity issues.

Little or no direct sunlight doesn’t help either.

The winter months normally provide the best breeding ground for mould and bacteria. Windows are closed to keep out the cold which reduces air circulation, heaters are turned on raising the humidity level in conjunction with hot showers that run longer than usual adding extra moisture to the environment.

The combination of these three factors alone creates a virtual sweatbox.

Understanding the basic principles of mould will allow you to avoid ever having an issue.
